In January, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed the One World Trade Center be lit in pink to celebrate the passage of “Reproductive Health Act.” Under that law, non-doctors are now allowed to conduct abortions, and the procedure could be done until the mother’s due date if the woman’s health is endangered or the baby is deemed not viable. New Mexico, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Virginia and Washington are also passing new laws expanding abortion access or moving to abolish old laws limiting abortions. An unsuccessful effort in Virginia followed the New York debacle with Gov. Northam indicating infanticide, as an “infant” could be killed after birth. In its state legislature, Republican House majority leader Todd Gilbert quizzed State Delegate Kathy Tran, sponsor of the Repeal Act that seeks to repeal third-trimester abortion restrictions. Gilbert asked if a woman about to give birth could request an abortion if a physician said it could impair her “mental health.” Tran replied: “My bill would allow that, yes.”
SCRIPTURE: Job 33:4; Ephesians 1:3-4.
PRAY: Public outcry opposes abortion and infanticide.
ACTION: Write a postcard: “Dear Gov. Cuomo, I am outraged by the barbaric Reproductive Health Act and urge New York to repeal it.” Gov. of New York State Andrew Cuomo, NYS State Capitol Building, Albany, NY 12224.

Did the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why contribute to the suicide of 14-year-old Anna Bright? Her parents believe so, saying Anna binge-watched episodes just two weeks before she ended her life in much the same way as a fictional character on the show. Several other parents also believe their teens took their lives after watching the series and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center has an entire section of their website dedicated to 13 Reasons Why because of a noted increase in suicides and attempted suicides among teens. As a result, the American Family Association is warning parents about the dangers of the show and has established a petition asking Netflix to cancel the show. Its third season is scheduled to start in May. AFA executive vice president Ed Vitagliano warned the whole series “is a dark and demonic primer for impressionable young people, inviting them to enter a realm of perversion, hatred and violence that has been birthed in hell itself.”
SCRIPTURE: Micah 6:8; 1 Timothy 4:12.
PRAY: For more wholesome entertainment for teens.
ACTION: Write a postcard to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings: “Dear Mr. Hastings, Please cancel the dangerous suicide revenge fantasy 13 Reason Why.” Reed Hastings, Netflix, 100 Winchester Circle, Los Gatos, CA 95032.

An open “gay rights” attorney who served nine years on the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission stepped down after Utah Sen. Mike Lee moved to block her re-appointment. Chai Feldblum was selected to the influential post in 2010 after the previous administration bypassed the Senate using a recess appointment. Her nomination drew national headlines after a 2006 interview came to light in which she suggested “sexual liberty should win” in the legal fight between “religious liberty and sexual liberty.” Feldblum later denied the quote, but her activities on the commission left little doubt as to her commitment to expand “homosexual rights.” One News Now reported she is credited with being the “lead drafter” of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, a “homosexual rights” bill expected to be a top priority for the new House. “Feldblum has described modern-day politics as a ‘zero-sum game,’ where rights for LGBT Americans are secured only by curtailing the rights of religious Americans,” Lee argued.
SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 12:17; 1 Timothy 2:1-2.
PRAY: More Christians appointed to federal posts.
ACTION: Write a postcard: “Dear Sen. Lee, Thank you for blocking Chai Feldblum’s reappointment.” Sen. Mike Lee, 361A Russell Senate Office Bldg., Washington, D.C. 20510.

Jack Phillips, the Christian baker who is facing a second discrimination prosecution by the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, can sue the state for harassment, a federal judge ruled. Last year, Phillips, the owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, prevailed at the U.S. Supreme Court after the commission targeted him for refusing to bake a wedding cake for a “same-sex” couple. Just three weeks later, the commission filed another complaint against Phillips, this time alleging he discriminated against a customer who wanted a custom “gender transition” cake. As in the first case, Phillips declined, saying it violated his religious beliefs. Although he refused to bake those specific cakes, Phillips did offer to sell them any other product that would not violate his religion. The state sought to dismiss Phillips’ suit, but U.S. District Judge Wiley Daniel found the baker had presented evidence of unfair conduct and hostility, “which is sufficient to establish they are pursuing the discrimination charges against Phillips in bad faith, motivated by Phillips’ suspect class (his religion),” Daniel wrote.
SCRIPTURE: Psalm 27:1; Matthew 5:16.
PRAY: God’s light would shine in midst of darkness.
ACTION: Write a postcard: “Dear Jack Phillips, I am praying for you as you stand for truth in the midst of harassment.” Jack Phillips, Masterpiece Cakeshop, 3355 S. Wadsworth Blvd. H-117, Lakewood, CO 80227.

Purchasing sex in Israel will become illegal next year after the Knesset unanimously approved a bill punishing anyone caught hiring sex workers. The bill will become law in 18 months, giving the Israeli state time to implement rehabilitation programs to help sex workers find legal work. In 2016, the Welfare Ministry estimated there were as many as 12,730 sex workers. The law intentionally targets those purchasing sex, using a model first introduced by Sweden in 1999. Sweden targets those buying sex instead of those selling it, saying prostitution is essentially an act of exploitation and violence by customers who hold a position of power and they should bear the brunt of the penalty. In addition to the criminal aspects for sex-purchasers, Israel will offer protection, social services, and assistance for sex workers. A coalition that included Exodus Cry, and its President/Founder Benjamin Nolot, gathered hundreds of signatures in support.
SCRIPTURE: Leviticus 19:29; Galatians 5:1.
PRAY: Other countries adopt similar laws.
ACTION: Write a postcard: “Dear Benjamin Nolot, Thank you for helping Israel criminalize buying sex.” Benjamin Nolot, Exodus Cry, 714 Main St., Grandview, MO 64030.

Salt & Light Opinion:We recently ran across an article regarding the upward tick in children questioning whether they are truly boys or girls despite their biological sex. The article, by California endocrinologist Dr. Michael K. Laidlaw, is a clearly articulated piece that boldly outlines the danger of “transgenderism” in children. According to Laidlaw’s findings, “transgender” children are at high risk of depression, suicide, substance abuse, sexual dysfunction, increased mortality rates, and other health issues. Further, he argues, “Transgender” children seeking to “transition [to the opposite sex]” face additional risks such as impeding the natural growth and maturation process of becoming adults, damaging future reproductive abilities, and, for males, exposing themselves to dangerous castration surgeries while their bodies have not fully developed. Despite the anything-goes mantra of pro-homosexual activists, “transgenderism” poses serious dangers to our children and our future.
SCRIPTURE: Psalm 119: 160; Galatians 5:19-21.
PRAY: More doctors shed light on transgender danger.
ACTION: For a Prayer and Action meeting, review local school districts’ policies regarding transgender students.

State CA

Marijuana deliveries across California—even into communities that have banned commercial pot sales—have been approved by the state agency overseeing Cannabis regulation. The approval came despite strong opposition by police chiefs and the League of California Cities, which said the new statewide regulation undermines local governmental control, a violation of Proposition 64. “Voters approved Prop. 64 with the understanding that local authority to regulate cannabis in a way that is best for their communities would be preserved,” proclaimed Carolyn Coleman, Executive Director of the League of California Cities. Lawsuits challenging the new regulations could be on the horizon. “This decision puts the public safety needs of communities across the state at risk,” Coleman argued. Other critics predict it will create an unruly market of largely hidden pot transactions. Assemblyman Rob Bonta, who supports delivery of medical marijuana but not for recreational use, said legislation may be needed.
SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 10:13-14; 1 Peter 5:8.
PRAY: Municipalities draft tough pot ordinances.
ACTION: Write a postcard: “Dear Assemblyman Bonta, Please introduce legislation reversing approval of delivery services for marijuana.” Assemblyman Rob Bonta, State Capitol, P.O. Box 942849, Sacramento, CA 94249-0018.

State FL

A Florida lawmaker has introduced a new measure requiring religion as a high-school elective. The bill by Rep. Kim Daniels would include, “An objective study of the Bible, including, but not limited to, a course on the Hebrew Scriptures and Old Testament of the Bible and a course on the New Testament of the Bible.” Additionally, “A student may not be required to use a specific translation of the Hebrew Scriptures or Bible as the sole text for the course.” Florida Pastor Troy Schmidt supports the law. “The Bible is a 2,000-plus-year-old document. It has a lot of historical significance, it formed our nation,” Schmidt surmised, adding students can choose whether to take the course. “It’s not being forced. People have the choice to take it or not, they could take any other course they want.” Conversely, David Williamson, co-founder of Central Florida Freethought Community, argued it would be difficult to implement an objective course.
SCRIPTURE: Psalm 1:1-3; 2 Timothy 3:14-15.
PRAY: For the expansion of sound doctrine in schools.
ACTION: Write a postcard: “Dear Rep. Daniels, Thank you for working to get the Bible back into the classroom.” Rep. Kimberly Daniels, 406 House Office Building, 402 South Monroe St., Tallahassee, FL 32399-1300.

State TX

Texas can strip taxpayer funding from Planned Parenthood while the nation’s largest abortion chain challenges the state’s decision to withhold Medicaid money for abortions. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling reverses a lower court decision blocking the state from defunding Planned Parenthood of about $3.1 million in tax dollars over concerns about the impact on low-income residents, according to the Washington Examiner.  The state moved to defund Planned Parenthood in 2016, citing evidence of fraudulent over-billing and potentially illegal sales of aborted-baby body parts. Although U.S. law prohibits Medicaid funding for abortions, states may allow patients to get other services by the provider. The defunding effort was delayed when Planned Parenthood filed suit. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton lauded the decision, commenting, “Planned Parenthood’s reprehensible conduct, captured in undercover videos, proves that it is not a ‘qualified’ provider under the Medicaid Act, so we are confident we will ultimately prevail.”
SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 3:9; Romans 13:12.
PRAY: Texas prevails in Planned Parenthood suit.
ACTION: Write a postcard to Texas AG Ken Paxton: “Dear A.G. Paxton, Thank you for protecting taxpayers by defunding Planned Parenthood.” A.G. Ken Paxton, Office of the Attorney General, P.O. Box 12548, Austin, TX 78711-2548.
